The Inbetween Archives Reading Order
Where the hell do I start?
Short answer:
Hard Parole.
Seriously.
Ignore the prequel label.
Ignore chronology.
Ignore the tiny voice in your head insisting that everything must be consumed according to an internally consistent timeline.
That voice has never met the Inbetween.
If you want the full answer, however:
Welcome to the briefing.
The recommended reading order
This is the order I recommend for the best combination of story, reveals and emotional damage.
1. Hard Parole
Main Series — Book One
Start here.
Wraith gets out of prison.
Kael becomes her Tether.
Ghost Command begins coming back from the dead.
Everything subsequently becomes more complicated.
This is the actual front door to The Inbetween Archives.
2. Conditional Release
Main Series — Book Two
Read this immediately after Hard Parole.
The mission may be over, but Wraith and Kael have rather spectacularly failed to return to normal life.
Shade moves properly into the centre of the story.
The Void stops being background scenery and begins having opinions.
Do not wander off yet.
You’re in the middle of something.
3. Ghost Formation
Prequel
Now go backwards.
Yes, now.
You have met Wraith, Shade, Geist, Spirit, Phantom and Rina.
You know enough about what happened to understand that something was lost.
Now meet Ash, Zane, Zahir, Matt, Elijah and Rina before they became Ghost Command—and watch them slowly become the family you already know they are going to lose.
Ghost Formation covers the years leading into and through the War, ultimately setting up the fractured world of Hard Parole.
Why here?
Because the next main-series book is where the entire original team finally stands together again.
You’ll appreciate that reunion much more once you understand what together used to mean.
OPTIONAL DETOUR: Raven Smile
Prequel Novella
Rina and Sin.
A fake marriage.
A senator who really should have chosen his victims more carefully.
Chronologically, Raven Smile happens much earlier, during Rina’s years as an SID Ethereal, roughly twelve years before the events of Hard Parole.
You don’t need it for the main plot.
But once you’ve spent time with Rina in Ghost Formation, this is an excellent place to discover exactly what she and Sin mean when they talk about that one SID-mandated marriage.
It also explains why those two trust each other in ways that occasionally alarm everyone around them.
OPTIONAL DETOUR: Halo Effect
Prequel / Post-War Story
The War ends.
Everyone survives. Sort of.
Because, obviously, that sentence is doing an unreasonable amount of work.
Halo Effect belongs in the aftermath: when Ghost Command has fractured, Wraith is gone, and the people left behind are trying to work out what survival is supposed to look like now.
If you’ve read Ghost Formation, this is a good point to continue following some of the people caught in the blast radius of its ending before returning to the present-day story.
4. Flight Risk
Main Series — Book Three
Back to the present.
Six months after Conditional Release.
Six years after the War.
And, for the first time since that War ended:
Ghost Command is all in one place.
Wraith.
Shade.
Geist.
Spirit.
Phantom.
Rina.
The family reunion would be complicated enough without government propaganda, ancient Artifacts, the people humanity once called the Others and several cosmic entities developing increasingly personal interests in the team.
Unfortunately, nobody consulted Geist about reasonable operational scope.
CLEARANCE INCREASED
If you’ve finished Flight Risk, congratulations.
You are now past the point where most of the side stories can casually ruin your day with spoilers.
This is where the Archives open up.
The Weight of Sin
Bonus Story
Sinjin Gray is bored.
This is traditionally a problem for everyone else.
Set in the wider post-mainline world and included among the Flight Risk bonus material, The Weight of Sin is firmly a read-after-Flight Risk story.
It gives you Sin, Rina, Jackie, grief, old history and several questionable ideas.
It also points backwards toward Raven Smile if you haven’t read that yet.
ACCESS THE WEIGHT OF SIN
Rivals’ Folly
Novel
Ed and Hannah.
One deeply inconvenient attraction.
A mercenary stronghold, a pile of bad decisions, and absolutely no chance either of them admits what’s really going on.
This is a side route through the Folly rather than a required chapter of the main cosmic storyline.
I recommend reading it after Flight Risk, when you already know the wider Folly cast and the increasingly strange family Ed has acquired.
5. Hostile Intent
Main Series — Book Four
Return to the main story.
The deadline Flight Risk has been warning about has arrived.
Helios is no longer content to remain somebody else’s problem.
Humanity wanted another war.
It may be about to discover that there are significantly worse things than the enemy it already knows.
6. Final Appeal
Main Series — Book Five
The final main Archive.
Everything that began with a prison cell, a Tether and one extremely questionable parole decision ends here.
There are no further briefing notes available at your current clearance.
Probably for the best.
The simple version
If you want only the main story, you can completely ignore every prequel, novella and bonus file.
Read:

That’s it.
You will understand the story.
You will know the characters.
You will suffer the intended amount.

The side stories don’t all advance the central plot.
They do something arguably more dangerous:
They give you context.
And context is how you end up caring far too much about people who make objectively terrible decisions.
But I always read chronologically
Of course you do.
There is always one.
Fine.
SID CHRONOLOGICAL FILE ORDER
This is approximately where the stories occur in-universe.
And I say approximately because Ghost Formation spans years, so several smaller stories sit within or around the period it covers.
THE PRE-GHOST YEARS
Ghost Formation begins
Zane and Ash meet as teenagers.
Over the following years, the people who will become Ghost Command find one another.
Raven Smile
During Rina’s earlier SID career, before Ghost Command has become the family you know.
Rina and Sin are assigned a mission.
Someone decides fake marriage is an appropriate operational cover.
Things escalate.
As things do.
Ghost Formation continues
Ghost Command forms.
The War intensifies.
The Inbetween gets considerably stranger.
The family gets considerably closer.
THE WAR ENDS
Ghost Formation concludes
If you’ve read Hard Parole, you already know that this is not going to end happily.
The book eventually delivers Wraith to the fate waiting for her at the beginning of Book One: alive, fractured, and destined for almost five years in a cell.
THE POST-WAR YEARS
Halo Effect
The immediate aftermath.
The dead, the presumed dead and the people left behind.
Good choices remain scarce.
ALMOST FIVE YEARS AFTER THE WAR
Hard Parole
1,782 days into Wraith’s imprisonment, Kael Veyne opens her cell door.
This is why chronological reading is not my recommended order.
The mystery of what happened to Ghost Command matters enormously to Hard Parole.
Knowing every answer beforehand changes the experience.
Conditional Release
Follows Hard Parole.
Do not put another five-year gap in here.
Nobody has recovered that much.
SIX MONTHS LATER
Flight Risk
And six years after the War, the full original Ghost Command team reunites.
Finally.
This goes exactly as smoothly as one might expect.
AFTER FLIGHT RISK
The Weight of Sin
Sin and the Folly.
Read here for maximum spoiler safety.

Ed and Hannah.
Also best experienced once you’ve reached this point in the wider series.

And then we all lie down somewhere quiet.
So can I start with Ghost Formation?
Yes.
The book will make sense.
You will meet the original Ghost Command from the beginning and follow their story chronologically.
Nobody will come to your house and confiscate it.
Geist has been asked not to.
But I still recommend Hard Parole first.
Why?
Because Hard Parole introduces Ghost Command as absence.
Wraith remembers these people.
Misses them.
Doesn’t know who survived.
Doesn’t know who they became.
Neither does Kael.
You discover them with the characters.
Ghost Formation changes those mysteries into dramatic irony.
That’s not necessarily worse.
It’s simply a different experience.
My preferred version is:
Meet the ghosts first.
Then meet the people they used to be.
Can I read Raven Smile on its own?
Yes.
It is one of the easiest side doors into the universe because its central story belongs to Rina and Sin rather than the main Wraith/Kael/Void arc.
You may miss some references.
You will still understand why marrying those two for operational purposes was an extraordinary lapse in institutional judgement.
Do I have to read the novellas and bonus stories?
No.
They’re bonuses. Actual bonuses.
Not “the main plot inexplicably happened in a spin-off and now Book Four assumes you’ve read it” bonuses.
The main series contains the main story.
The other Archives give you:
More characters;
More history;
More relationships;
More context;
And additional opportunities to become emotionally compromised.
Take whichever side routes interest you.
What about spoilers?
This series gets increasingly difficult to discuss without ruining things.
So each book and Archive page uses clearance guidance.

Haven’t read Hard Parole.
We know nothing.
Life is peaceful.
Enjoy it.

Finished Hard Parole.
Ghost-related information becoming available.
CLEARANCE 2
Finished Conditional Release.
You know enough to become dangerous.

Finished Flight Risk.
Most current Archive material is now safe.
“Safe” remains a relative term.
CLEARANCE 4+
Caught up with the current main series.
SID no longer assumes responsibility for your emotional wellbeing.
